Padul: Senda del Mamut, Ruta Vega Grande, Ojo Oscuro, Agia y Mamut

This easy and scenic hike begins in Padul, close to the famous Mammoth statues. From there, we follow the path of the old tram line toward Dúrcal, passing the historic tram station and entering the fertile Vega de Padul. The route continues alongside a recently built canal that leads us gently into the Padul Wetlands, a place of great ecological importance.

Once inside the wetlands, we pass by a frog pond, a viewpoint, picnic areas, and a bird observatory, where we can often spot herons and other local species. We then visit the Charca del Ojo Oscuro, a peaceful and beautiful lagoon surrounded by reeds. After a short return section, the trail follows a dirt road that loops around the wetlands. Although the vegetation has grown thick in some areas, the landscape remains captivating.

The hike crosses several historic irrigation channels, such as Acequia de la Madre Maestra, del Ventano, and del Río Viejo, before heading back toward Padul. The final stretch follows the Avenida del Valle de Lecrín, bringing us back to the starting point. It’s an easy, enjoyable route suitable for everyone, perfect for discovering the natural and cultural heritage of this unique area.

If you bring a dog, make sure to bring a leash, in some sections, dogs must be kept on it as we’ll walk along roads where cars may pass.
