Güéjar Sierra: Acequia de la Solana, Río Maitena, Embalse Canales

This varied hike starts just outside the center of Güéjar Sierra, from the parking area on the edge of the village. Güéjar Sierra is a traditional mountain village at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, where water has always played a vital role. Shortly after leaving the village behind, we enter a peaceful and green landscape shaped by centuries-old irrigation systems.

A large part of the route follows the Acequia de la Solana, a traditional water channel that is still in use today. These acequias transport meltwater and spring water through the hills, making this hike especially pleasant, even on warmer days. Along the way, we also pass sections of the old Sierra Nevada tram route, where traces of the historic railway can still be seen.

Later, the route descends toward the Río Maitena and the Embalse de Canales, where the scenery opens up and wider views appear. Surrounded by water and mountains, this is a perfect spot for a short break. This hike beautifully combines nature, history, and the unique water management system that defines this area.
