Calahonda: Playa La Rijana, Pico del Águila

This spectacular hike along the Costa Tropical combines mountains, history and sea in one varied route. We begin at the beautiful Cala de la Rijana, an idyllic cove with crystal-clear water and steep cliffs rising above the coast. In the morning, the area often feels calm and peaceful, making it the perfect place to enjoy the scenery before starting the climb.

Following the Barranco Zacatín, we gradually ascend through rugged terrain filled with rock formations and impressive views over the Mediterranean Sea. Along the way, we pass unusual speleothems formed within the rocks and reach the area near the Faro de la Estancia, a historic lookout point above the coastline. Later comes the demanding ascent towards the Pico del Águila, where we are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across the sea, the mountains and the surrounding coast.

During the hike, we encounter several remains from the past, including trenches and a shelter from the Spanish Civil War. Further on, we pass old cortijos, hidden springs and traditional acequias that once played an essential role in life in this dry landscape. The combination of nature, history and dramatic coastal scenery makes this a truly unforgettable hike.

If you want, you can shorten this hike by 3,6 kilometers by waiting at certain points until the group returns. These are short linear sections leading to a viewpoint.
