This varied hike starts just outside the center of Güéjar Sierra, from the parking area on the edge of the village. Güéjar Sierra is a traditional mountain village at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, where water has always played a vital role. Shortly after leaving the village behind, we enter a peaceful and green landscape shaped by centuries-old irrigation systems.
A large part of the route follows the Acequia de la Solana, a traditional water channel that is still in use today. These acequias transport meltwater and spring water through the hills, making this hike especially pleasant, even on warmer days. Along the way, we also pass sections of the old Sierra Nevada tram route, where traces of the historic railway can still be seen.
Later, the route descends toward the Río Maitena and the Embalse de Canales, where the scenery opens up and wider views appear. Surrounded by water and mountains, this is a perfect spot for a short break. This hike beautifully combines nature, history, and the unique water management system that defines this area.
Esta ruta comienza justo a las afueras del centro de Güéjar Sierra, desde el aparcamiento situado en el límite del pueblo. Güéjar Sierra es un pueblo de montaña tradicional a los pies de Sierra Nevada, donde el agua siempre ha sido fundamental para la vida local. Al poco de comenzar, dejamos atrás el casco urbano y nos adentramos en un entorno tranquilo y verde, marcado por antiguos sistemas de riego.
Gran parte del recorrido discurre junto a la Acequia de la Solana, un canal de agua tradicional que todavía sigue en funcionamiento. Estas acequias transportan el agua de deshielo y de manantiales a través del paisaje, haciendo que la caminata sea muy agradable, especialmente en épocas calurosas. Durante la ruta también pasamos por tramos de la antigua línea del tranvía de Sierra Nevada, cuyos restos aún se conservan.
Más adelante descendemos hacia el Río Maitena y el Embalse de Canales, donde el paisaje se abre y las vistas se amplían. Rodeados de agua y montañas, encontramos un entorno perfecto para hacer una breve pausa. Esta ruta es una excelente combinación de naturaleza, historia y el singular sistema de gestión del agua de esta región.
