This varied hike starts just outside Vélez de Benaudalla and immediately takes us into the surrounding landscape, following the river that guides us throughout the route. Vélez lies at the foot of the Sierra de Lújar and has a strong Moorish heritage, still reflected in the wider area through old water systems and agricultural landscapes.
We follow the river through the Guadalfeo valley, where open sections and narrower river passages alternate. The water and surrounding mountains constantly shape the scenery, with beautiful views of rugged hills and surrounding ravines. The river acts as a natural guide throughout the hike.
The highlight of the route is the impressive Rules dam, which we admire from below. This dam holds back the waters of the Río Guadalfeo, forming the large Embalse de Rules reservoir, an important water source for the region. The scale of the structure, combined with the surrounding mountain walls, makes for a striking final destination. After a break, we return via the same route.
Esta variada ruta de senderismo comienza justo a las afueras de Vélez de Benaudalla y nos adentra directamente en el paisaje, siguiendo el río que nos acompañará durante todo el recorrido. Vélez se encuentra a los pies de la Sierra de Lújar y posee un importante pasado andalusí, reflejado aún hoy en el entorno y en los sistemas tradicionales de agua de la zona.
Seguimos el curso del río por el valle del Guadalfeo, donde se alternan tramos abiertos con otros más encajados junto al cauce. El agua y las montañas marcan constantemente el paisaje, con bonitas vistas de colinas y barrancos escarpados. El río actúa como hilo conductor de toda la ruta.
El punto culminante es la impresionante presa de Rules, que contemplamos desde abajo. Esta presa retiene las aguas del río Guadalfeo formando el gran embalse de Rules, una infraestructura clave para el abastecimiento de agua de la región. La magnitud de la construcción y el entorno montañoso hacen de este lugar un final realmente impactante. Tras una pausa, regresamos por el mismo camino.
