This route starts in Canillas de Aceituno, a charming white village in the mountains of the Axarquía. The trail leads through the surrounding hills to the spectacular suspension bridge of El Saltillo, a highlight both for its stunning views and its adventurous crossing. If accessible, we can also include the path to the nearby waterfall for an even more scenic experience. This makes the route a bit longer, but definitely worth it. However, this is not always possible.
The trail passes through varied terrain, including wooded areas, rocky paths, and riverbeds, offering an authentic glimpse of the rugged beauty of the Andalusian mountains. Along the way, hikers enjoy panoramic views of the valleys, the mountains, and the village itself.
The hike ends back in Canillas de Aceituno, allowing time to explore the village or relax with a drink after a rewarding day in the mountains. This route is suitable for those comfortable with moderate ascents and mountain trails.
Hikers with a fear of heights may want to skip the section to the waterfall (if it’s open). There’s a steep drop along part of the trail, and crossing the bridge can also be a bit nerve-racking. If the access to the waterfall is closed, the total length is 7.6 km.
Parking is available in the underground car park if there’s no space left at the meeting point (which is quite likely).
Esta caminata comienza en Canillas de Aceituno, un encantador pueblo blanco en las montañas de la Axarquía. La ruta nos lleva por las colinas circundantes hasta el espectacular Puente Colgante El Saltillo, un punto destacado tanto por sus vistas como por la emocionante travesía. Si está accesible, también se puede incluir la ruta hacia la cascada cercana para una experiencia más escénica.
El sendero atraviesa terrenos variados, incluyendo zonas boscosas, caminos rocosos y cauces de río, ofreciendo una auténtica muestra de la belleza agreste de las montañas andaluzas. A lo largo del camino, los excursionistas disfrutan de vistas panorámicas de los valles, las montañas y del propio pueblo.
La caminata finaliza de nuevo en Canillas de Aceituno, dejando tiempo para explorar el pueblo o relajarse con una bebida tras un día gratificante en la montaña. Es una ruta apta para quienes se sienten cómodos con subidas moderadas y senderos de montaña. Si es accesible, también podemos incluir el sendero hasta la cascada cercana para una experiencia más pintoresca. Esto hace la ruta un poco más larga, pero sin duda vale la pena. Sin embargo, esto no siempre es posible.
Los senderistas con vértigo deberían evitar el tramo hacia la cascada (si está abierto). Hay una parte del sendero con un precipicio pronunciado y cruzar el puente también puede resultar un poco impresionante. Si el acceso a la cascada está cerrado, la longitud total es de 7,6 km.
Se puede aparcar en el aparcamiento subterráneo si no hay sitio en el punto de encuentro (lo cual es bastante probable).
