This challenging hike starts north of La Herradura in the mountains, following mostly 4×4 tracks through rugged terrain. Halfway along the route, there is an option to continue to the summit of Peñón de los Castillejos, adding around 200 meters of elevation. Those who prefer a gentler route can wait at a designated point, making the hike easier.
The trail was once called the “Bee-Eater” route, named after the colorful birds that used to inhabit the area, although they haven’t been seen here for many years. The hike offers spectacular mountain scenery and impressive views of the coast.
With its combination of climbs, panoramic vistas, and variable terrain, this route is physically demanding and best suited for experienced hikers who enjoy a challenging day in nature.
Esta exigente caminata comienza al norte de La Herradura, en las montañas, y sigue principalmente pistas de 4×4 por un terreno agreste. A mitad de la ruta, existe la opción de continuar hasta la cima del Peñón de los Castillejos, ganando unos 200 metros de desnivel. Quienes prefieran un recorrido más suave pueden esperar en un punto designado, haciendo la caminata más fácil.
El sendero se conocía antiguamente como la ruta del “Bee-Eater” (Abejaruco), en honor a estas coloridas aves que habitaban la zona, aunque hace muchos años que no se las ve. La caminata ofrece un paisaje montañoso espectacular y vistas impresionantes de la costa.
Con su combinación de subidas, panorámicas y terreno variado, esta ruta es físicamente exigente y está especialmente indicada para senderistas experimentados que buscan un día desafiante en la naturaleza.
